Should you be concerned about the flammability of the shellac and alcohol mix if you are spraying it in a non-explosion proof but well ventilated spray booth? No open flames would be present but non xp fan motors and lights would be on. |

For us Canadians who can't get everclear, what kind of alcohol is good to be used? Is methyl hydrate ok? |

I use 99% Isopropyl as recommended by Jeff at supplier Wood Essence in Saskatoon - available in pharmacies as rubbing alcohol, has to be 99%, not 70% I have been using this for years, seems to work fine. |

Be careful with Methyl Hydrate. A quote from Canadian Woodworking: "Methyl hydrate will certainly dissolve shellac but all is definitely not well. Methyl hydrate is a carcinogen and is readily absorbed through the skin. The thin latex or nitrile gloves most people use when finishing will not stop it being absorbed. The Canadian government in all its wisdom does not allow the sale of denatured alcohol in Canada but had no qualms about letting the much more dangerous methyl hydrate to be sold in every hardware and paint store around. I use 99% isopropyl alcohol for shellac work and find it quite satisfactory" |
